Scientific Name:
Larus heermanni
Description
This gull has a smokey gray chest, white head and red beak. Its back feathers and tail feathers are darker gray.
Behaviors
Unlike most species that fly south for the winter, Heermann's gulls breed in Mexico and travel north to us in Point Lobos and as far north as British Columbia during the summer and fall.
Fun Facts
They are known as specialized kleptoparasites (or pirate gulls), frequently stealing fish directly from the pouches of pelicans!
