Hermit Thrush

Catharus guttatus
Description

Medium sized thrush, brown above, brown spotted throat and speckled brown and white chest, with a distinct reddish tail. Their beautiful song is what you may hear first, before seeing them. Their beak is black at the tip only.  

Behaviors

They hop around foraging on the forest floor for ants beetles, caterpillars, bees, wasps, and flies. In the fall they switch to eating berries. 

Fun Facts

The "Hermit" comes from the difficulty in seeing them, but their melodies captivate humans as the song is organized into harmonious chords similar to Western musical scales.
