Pygmy Nuthatch

Sitta pygmaea
Description

Tiny songbird with a dark, pointy bill and whiteish to sandy-beige undersides. Wings are slate gray and it wears a brown cap on its head up to the eyes, over a white chin.

Behaviors

They travel and breed in extended family groups. Found in pine forests and seen on the Lace Lichen Trail hopping busily up and down the trunks of Monterey Pines searching for beetles, ants, termites and other arthropods.

Fun Facts

A group of these birds is collectively called a "jar"!

They are known for their habit of communal roosting, where they huddle together in tree cavities to survive cold nights by conserving body heat.
