Description
Small acrobatic bird with pointed wings and slightly forked tail. Adult males have a green back, green head, iridescent violet rump and very white chest. Females are similar, but less showy. Excellent flyers, catching insects on the fly!
Behaviors
Violet-green swallows can be seen close to the water, flying over the surface and swooping and catching their insect lunch. Close to the ground they feast on flies, leafhoppers, aphids, winged termites, beetles, and winged ants that they catch and eat in midair.
