In Whalers Cove, this sea otter has a rounded rock resting on its belly, and is pounding what appears to be a California mussel against it to get it open to eat. Though it has extremely dense fur, it lacks a thick layer blubber found in other marine mammals, to keep itself warm in these cold ocean temperatures. So the sea otter must eat about 25% of its body weight each day to keep the blood pumping and keep itself warm. Imagine if you ate 25% of your body weight every day!
