Scientific Name:
Anthopleura xanthogrammica
Description
Large (up to 25 cm / 10 in wide) bright green anemone found in the mid to low intertidal zone. Their “sticky” tentacles are covered with stinging cells to catch passing food in the water, or even live prey like crabs and snails.
Behaviors
Like the aggregating anemone, giant green anemones host algae that live inside their bodies and provide the anemones with food through photosynthesis.
Fun Facts
In bright sunlight, giant green anemones display brighter shades of green because the algae growing inside them is strong and healthy. In shady areas, they will appear a duller, dark green.
