Scientific Name:
Pityohyphantes costatus
Description
Very small (5–7 mm in length), with a jagged red-brown band running down its light tan abdomen.
Behaviors
Unlike most spiders, this species creates a convex (mound-shaped) web that curves upward and is held up by additional strands of silk webbing.
Fun Facts
Hammock spiders’ scientific name Pityohyphantes is very fitting. It’s Greek for “pine weaver,” and they spin their webs in pine forests. Look for them in the Monterey pine forests of Point Lobos!
