Juvenile Rockfish

Description

There are over 100 species of rockfish in Monterey Bay and Carmel, and many are very hard to tell apart, especially when they are young. Many are mottled (splotched) in shades of tan, brown and rust, with frilly fins.

Behaviors

A popular snack for many predators, the juvenile (young) rockfish shelter close to the kelp for protection. Rocky crevices also provide important hide-outs from predators, including birds like egrets and herons, who will catch them from above.

Fun Facts

Rock fish are in the family Scorpaenidae which means they have slightly poisonous spines. As these young fish grow, this venom can help protect them from predators.
