Raccoon

Scientific Name:
Procyon lotor
Description

Small (up to .9 m/3 ft in length) omnivorous mammal with black and gray fur, mask-like black facial markings, and a striped tail. The five toes on its front paws are very sensitive and nimble, allowing it to open latches and jars, and find food underwater.

Behaviors

Raccoons are adaptable, opportunistic feeders, which means they will eat a wide variety of foods. Nocturnal (active at night), they are curious and intelligent, with good memories. Although they do not hibernate, they fatten up and sleep more in winter months.

Fun Facts

Good swimmers, raccoons can stay in the water for several hours.
