A Wrentit is a small bird with a long tail and tiny bill. Plain brownish-gray with a lighter patch above the eye, a Wrentit could be confused with the smaller bushtit.
Wrentits feed mainly on insects and spiders, especially during the spring and summer. In the fall and winter, when insects are scarcer, they supplements their diet with a variety of berries and small fruits, including those of poison oak.
Wrentits are aggravatingly secretive, singing and hiding in the coastal shrub and chaparral. The male's song sounds like a ping-pong ball bouncing on a table. You are more likely to hear them than see them.
Wrentits rarely travel more than 1,300 feet from their birthplace! They are home bodies and hang out with their "for life" mates.
