With springtime here, we can explore the world of spring wildflowers at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve. Seaside daisy (Erigeron glaucus) fills in the crevices of the cliffs and blankets the headlands always near "the roar of the shore". This sunflower family beauty can be recognized by it pale purple 'ray' flowers and vibrant yellow 'disk' flowers. The secret to the sunflower family is that many of its species are comprised of these two different flowers. Also, identified by a hairy stem, and a pale green, fleshy, slightly slimy leaf. Insects use this flower as evidenced by the footage here. Gracing our coastal landscape from southern California to Oregon, the seaside daisy has a long blooming season well into the fall.
