Description

Very small (up to 20 cm / 8 in) rodent with gray to tawny fur, round ears and long whiskers.

Behaviors

Known to build elaborate “houses” of sticks that can measure up to 1 square meter (3.2 ft). They are vegetarians and feed mostly on leaves, seeds, fruits, or bark.

Fun Facts

Dusky-footed woodrats have been known to carry shiny objects like pens or keys back to their houses, but the reason for this behavior is unknown.
